GREENWOOD RISING
Black Wall Street
In 1921, a group of white residents in Tulsa, Oklahoma destroyed the thriving African American neighborhood of Greenwood, known as Black Wall Street, flattening over 35 blocks, and killing over three hundred people. The incident known today as the Tulsa Race Massacre was covered up by the state and federal government and is often not taught in American schools. The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission tapped Local Projects to develop an exhibition space that will tell the story not only of the Massacre itself, but also of the remarkable and resilient Greenwood community.
ENCLAVE
Our work focused on shaping the exhibition's storytelling and experiential direction, translating Greenwoodâs history into clear narrative pathways and thematic content. This included developing exhibit storylines, historical frameworks, and creative concepts that guide visitors through Greenwoodâs rise, destruction, and renewal. The design approach emphasized resilience and reconstruction through layered storytelling, environmental concepts, and supporting visual direction aligned with the âbrick by brickâ identity of the project.
VISUAL IDENTITY
We created a unified visual identity system across print and digital platforms to support the Greenwood Rising experience. Deliverables included logo design, typography, iconography, color systems, and branded materials such as brochures, posters, business cards, tickets, apparel, and editorial layouts. We also developed website and social media mockups and campaign assets to ensure a consistent and impactful visual presence that reinforced the museumâs mission of education, remembrance, and community engagement.
VISUAL IDENTITY: PUSH & PULL
Greenwood Risingâs visual identity pays tribute to the enduring resilience and dynamic energy of the Greenwood District. Every design choice is intentionalâdrawing from the areaâs rich cultural roots and the bold entrepreneurial legacy of Black Wall Street. The palette of deep, earthy colors conveys layers of history and strength, while contemporary typography and crisp lines represent forward movement and renewal. Historical photographs and artwork are seamlessly woven throughout, forging a visual dialogue between past and present. This design strategy not only pays homage to the communityâs legacy but also inspires visitors to actively engage with the narratives and lived experiences that define this remarkable neighborhood.
